Cycling in Andalucia


The Beast

We aim to fly out of Cork on Sunday 4 Nov. and return on Sunday 11 Nov. We will be flying to Malaga and transferring by coach to Granada.

Things to remember

Essentials: Your own airline E ticket, Valid passport. Cash – Euros, euro health Form EHIC – Available F.O.C. from your local health centre.

BRING: Clothes – suggestions
1. Camera+spare disk a. 2 complete changes including shoes
2. Money belt and socks (one being the decor set!)
3. Toiletries b. Comfy tracksuit bottoms
4. Swim gear c. 1 or 2 pairs runners
5. Sunscreen d. Rain jacket! We may get rain
6. Cycle shorts e. Fleece jacket – for cold evenings
7. Sense of humour
8. Gloves (cycle mitts) 10. Personal first aid kit.
9. Sunglasses 11. Gel saddle cover

Sunday 4th November
Early rise at 04.00 to fly out at 07.00 from Cork. Seamless transfer from Malaga to Granada. Good hotel. Cloudy with rain in the air. Visit to The Alhambra. Good meal in restaurant well off the tourist track. Bed late and a good night’s sleep.

Monday 5th
60 kms Cloudy and dry. Steepest climb 300m in 5.5 kms. Wet end to the day. Arab bath and massage in the hotel and a good meal after. Slept well.

Tuesday 6th
40kms. Wet most of the day. Interesting stops for ‘currahio’ (brandy and coffee) and an excellent value lunch. The octopus was a tad tough! Hotel well up in the hills. Comfortable apartment room and good evening meal.
Dinner

Wednesday 7th
35 kms. Low cloud this am. Good breakfast. Did some climbing then down below the cloud to a coffee break. Then uphill again into cloud. Some lovely views of mountains and low cloud across the valleys. Lunched while the bad weather enveloped us. Decided to take a taxi to Antequera. Dinner in town. Bed around 10.30.

Thursday 8th
View from the Castle
Comfortable room but breakfast left lot to be desired. Bike broke so we decided to do a tour of Antequera including a visit to the Alcazaba and a taxi to our next stop. Lagarganta is a fascinating sports centre/hotel attached to a hydroelectric power station. Good evening meal.

Friday 9th
Thunder storms over night. Took train to Ronda. Coffee in the Parador.

Did some significant shopping.

Very pleasing stay in a quirky hotel. Dinner in local restaurant.
And so Joan and Mike go off for the evening

Saturday 10th
Bad boys were thrown out of the door in the wall
Sun up and into Ronda for a little light shopping. Coach to Malaga and booked into a central hotel. Spent the afternoon walking around Malaga. Dinner in a little Trattoria.half raciones

Sunday 11th
Preparation for the journey home
Good breakfast and off to the airport for an 11.30am flight. Arrived back in Cork 2hrs 45min later having gained an hour.It was dry and calm but 10degrees cooler.
