One of 2 Personnel Managers responsible to the Human Resources Director. Employing 1,000 staff in East Anglia delivering high quality patient services to a population of 2.1m across an area of 5,500 squqre miles.
I provided a comprehensive personnel service to line managers responsible for 500 staff including the headquarters in Norwich. This involved:
maintaining personnel files for all staff
ensuring the accuracy of the personnel database using a computerized personnel information system linked to salary and benefit payment
liaising with the payroll department ensuring appropriate transfer of information for payment of sickness and accident and maternity benefit payment
liaising with the pensions department to ensure timely transfer of information for staff retirement
handling staff queries regarding payment of salary and benefits
providing advice to line managers on matters of policy and employment law
providing guidance and advice at all levels within the disciplinary and grievance rocedures
initiating the the recruitment process for posts at all levels within the organization
administering and interpreting ability and personality tests
developing new policies and ensuring that existing policies are kept up to date
Greene King plc 1995 – 1996
Personnel Adviser responsible to the Head of Personnel and Development for advising all levels within the company on employment.
Published an “Introduction to Greene King” for new employees.
Wrote and produced a personnel policy and procedures manual for the group covering all aspects of the employment relationship with the company.
Headed project to introduce benefit statements.
Member of the project team introducing a share save option scheme.
Greene King plc 1978 – 1995
Employee Relations Adviser. Responsible to the Production and Distribution Director for advising on employee relations.
Prepared agreements, procedures, hand-books, terms and conditions of employment, etc.
Led trade union negotiations at both lay and full time official levels with the TGWU.
Briefed and trained line managers.
Appointed pension fund trustee.
Key Areas of Success
Restructuring of Distribution Department which involved the introduction of new vehicles and manning levels coupled with reduced earnings levels and increased output. A payroll saving was achieved of £.4m pa.
The negotiation of productivity agreements at 2 breweries and 6 depots which introduced more efficient working patterns.
The development and introduction of appropriate personnel policies and procedures to ensure that managers are able to manage with best practice e.g. a system of absence monitoring which reduced absenteeism from >7% to <3%.

On a multi union site with 3 manual and 3 staff unions recognized. Responsible for control and running of a Personnel Dept across 3 locations with 3,000 employees, together with the training function covering apprentice and adult training via a manager and 3 instructors.
